Race Recap: Everton 10K (Sunday 4th October 2026)
by Anna Williams
What a day out at the Everton 10K today! For anyone looking for a flat, fast event with a true big-city feel, this race is an absolute gem.
Coming in from Ormskirk, logistics couldn't have been easier. Merseyrail even laid on an extra train ten minutes before the usual Sunday departure—a fantastic touch for local runners. It was brilliant seeing plenty of friendly faces from SBH, EPOTs, and LPS right on the platform at Ormskirk station before more runners filled up the train at stops further down the line. It was a great catch-up on board with Jo, Carol, Michelle L, and Geoff, which kept any pre-race nerves nicely under control before we arrived at Sandhills to a warm welcome from the station crew wishing us luck.
A short stroll brought us to the impressive Hill Dickinson Stadium. The event village on the plaza was brilliantly organized—just the right amount of time to drop bags, catch up with everyone, and get lined up without feeling rushed. A massive bonus was having indoor stadium toilets instead of queuing for portaloos!
The weather was ideal for racing: cool, overcast enough not to be too bright, and perfectly dry. The start line organisation made a world of difference compared to the chaos at the Liverpool Half. Waves were called up cleanly by predicted times, allowing everyone to build into a steady, comfortable pace right from the gun without any frantic overtaking or getting boxed in during the opening kilometers.
Despite feeling a bit under the weather with a cold, I managed to keep every kilometer remarkably even, finding an extra gear to push a bit harder over the final 2km. The course is famously flat—claiming to be one of the flattest in the country. Starting from Hill Dickinson Stadium, the first section takes you down towards Liverpool’s docks before looping back to the stadium for the 5k mark and water station, then taking a loop past Brocklebank Dock before a straight, rapid stretch to the finish line just outside the stadium.
I finished close to my PB, and my new ASICS bought in Japan definitely helped! I had a bit of a mental block thinking they were "too good" for a mediocre runner, but huge thanks to Michelle L for convincing me to finally wear them when we ran the Altrincham 10K together.
Crossing the finish line brought a shiny medal, water, and an opened can of Red Bull (they were strict about cracking them open first!). Back on the plaza, it was great catching up with Geoff and Michelle D from LPS, whom I train with regularly—sorry for using you two as my pacemakers out on the road! Another massive shoutout goes to Viv, who is battling back from an injury. She finished in high spirits, taking it as a great step forward on the road to recovery.
With its fast course, brilliant crowd support, and city views without feeling overwhelming, the Everton 10K is an absolute winner. Now that it’s added to the SBH Grand Prix list for next year, I hope to see plenty of Skem Harriers out on the start line. Fingers crossed we get the exact same weather next time!
