Sunday morning saw 16 Harriers at Amberswood nature reserve for Wigan Harriers annual 10k trail race. Apparently, the sun always shines for this race and this year was no exception, with sunscreen and sun hats advised!
The route took us through woodland trails and gravel paths round the lakes on a two-lap course. It was hot and dusty, and we were grateful for the shade when it came. A fast and flat route, with lots of encouraging marshals and members of the public, and two trips past a very welcome water station. Ladies captain Jem and her dog Marley were out on the course supporting us and being our official photographer.
Despite lots of competition from other local clubs, our runners did team SBH proud with James third in the men’s rankings. Also running were Paul M and Paul C, Andy and Adie. The ladies outnumbered the men, with Anna, Su, Rach, Katy, Elizabeth, Karolina, Ursula, Jenny, Vicky and Viv out on the course in the amber and black club colours. A special mention has to go to Katy, who fell early on – but despite some rather sore looking scrapes she carried on and finished the race – go girl!
There were prizes for the first man and woman from each club, well done to James and Anna!
Perhaps the best part of the morning was after the race, when everyone sat out in the sun waiting for the presentations, enjoying the free pies, peas and gravy (some had more than one serving, mentioning no names!) and even the odd pint. Definitely a race to put in the diary for next year.
